Meaning of Service, the Illinois Humanities Council program bringing civic reflection to AmeriCorps members nationwide, with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, held its third annual conference in Chicago on October 18-19. The two-day event, described by a participant as "fertile ground for both formal and informal learning," brought together over 30 facilitators, AmeriCorps program staff, and humanities council staff from 13 states in a "best practices" workshop. In addition to doing civic reflection—using readings by George Orwell, O. Henry, and Mikhail Naimy—participants focused on the key elements of successful programs and laid groundwork for future Meaning of Service initiatives.
